Overview

Please join Carl Anderson and Matt Glover for a two-day virtual institute!

This institute is designed for the K-8 teacher who wants to improve or strengthen their writing instruction skills, as well as for the literacy coaches, administrators, and curriculum specialists who support them.

The theme of this institute is on the teaching of writing, which is an important focus of Carl and Matt’s upcoming new book, How to Become a Better Writing Teacher (Fall, 2023). How do we learn to be curriculum decision-makers who design writing units of study thoughtfully and effectively to maximize student growth across the school year? In these units, how do we teach clearly and precisely in mini-lessons, small group lessons, and writing conferences, using mentor texts as the anchor of instruction? How do we do all of this teaching so that step-by-step, we help students become good writers with repertoires of writing strategies and craft techniques, and who know how to use writing conventions?

The two days will each begin with a keynote, followed by a workshop co-led by Carl and Matt.  Keynotes and workshops will help attendees improve how they teach writing. Breakout sessions will explore other topics, such as immersing students in mentor texts and tips for improving writing conferences. Each day will conclude with a Q & A session with Carl and Matt.

Participants will see video of work that Carl and Matt have done with children, as well as read and study student writing and mentor texts. During the institute, participants will learn practical strategies they can use as soon as they return to their classrooms and which will help them become better teachers of writing.

10:00am-10:45am: Keynote by Carl or Matt
10:45am-11:00am: Break
11:00am-12:30pm: Workshop co-led by Carl and Matt
12:30pm-1:00pm: Lunch
1:00pm-2:00pm: Breakout session with Carl or Matt*
2:00pm-2:30pm: Q & A time with Carl and Matt
